Eureka Eurostars 3 Project “MICROwave Temperature Evaluation for Additive Manufacturing” (uTEAM)

The Applied Electromagnetism Group of the Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture of the University of Genoa has started a research activity regarding the development of an innovative microwave technology for monitoring the 3D printing process based on polymer powder bed fusion.

The monitoring system will be able to "illuminate" the printing area with an electromagnetic field generated by an ad-hoc developed set of antennas and electronic module, and, based on the measurements of the scattering field produced by the printed objects, reconstruct the distributions of the dielectric parameters using innovative algorithms, from which the temperature inside the powder bed can then be calculated.

The project has been funded under the Eureka Eurostars 3 program and is carried out in collaboration with Gruppo FOS (project leader, based in Genoa), UAB Gruppo FOS Lithuania, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), Inspire AG and Sintratec AG.
